Synopsis
- SUBIRA, 11, is a cheeky young girl who wants to live by the same rules that apply to her younger brother.
Raised in an orthodox Muslim community in the remote island of Lamu, Kenya, her tyrannical mother wants her to follow tradition, learn household chores and aim to be a good wife, just like all the rest.
SUBIRA however, has other plans. She wants to live by her own rules no matter what people say.
This searing family drama vividly captures the paradox of modernity versus tradition.

I recently saw this film after having read about all the awards etc.
I must say I was bitterly disappointed. The film seems to lack any depth, the acting was embaressingly amateurish and the subject matter has been tackled before many times. On the whole i felt mislead by all the talk of "awards won" perhaps this film is considered a success in Africa, i dont believe it stands any chance elsewhere in the world. There is far more talented and inspired film making to be found in other countries.
this was not the case for me..i found it a wonderfully insightful and important work
